Photohunter: Wild

We all love to go to 'wild' places to relax, go hiking or camping, go out on a boat, or to the beach. However, there are very few places that have not felt the presence of humans in one form or another. It's always dishearting to me to go to the beach and see something like this... But what is worse is seeing the people hanging out on the beach as if this is a normal or natural state of affairs. They place their beach blankets in between piles of trash and let their kids run around. Why aren't they upset? What will their kids grow up to think?

We have a responsibility in keeping these places clean. It does not matter whose mess it is or whose fault it is, we all use these places... so we need to give back to them. That's why next Saturday, I am participating in the international beach clean-up. For more about that visit here. Do you know where your nearest clean-up is? There are always some clean-ups around, if you look, or you can always take the initiative yourself. The next time you visit your favorite spot, pick up five pieces of trash, as a way of 'paying back' for the time you spent there.

I used to see this in Corpus Christi,TX. when I lived there, never had seen such nasty beaches. It is sad that people won't pick it up and ignore it.

Sadly thats what our beach looks like too. Litter where you should find bits of broken shell and seaweed. -sigh-

Sad, but true. Even the last time I went to Sarasota for a few days of beach R&R, I could pick out my beach spot by the trash "markers". Very evocative post.

Thanks for dropping by!

I always had the same thoughts as you on why some people were not civil minded enough as to clean up their messes before leaving the beach. There should have been ample rubbish bins for that purposes but most of them are just too lazy to even move a few steps away to throw their rubbish.

That's a sore sight indeed and I'm sure it would have been a bad reputation for the tourists as well. Worst still, those rubbish might get washed down the sea and affect the marine eco-systems. I hope there would be more awareness on this.

That's an excellent post and thank you for encouraging us to help out the environment. :)

Hi - I'm the owner of Pyewacket, the Old Style Siamese. My siamese before her, a new Oriental model, suffered health problems (and mental health problems) and died at age seven!

That is why I went to the trouble of finding a breeder who was working on re-establishing the "old" style of siamese from fifty years ago. Pye is not at all neurotic, and is well shaped and healthy.

She came from Victoria, we live up and hour north in Canberra. Oh and that breeder sends cats all over the world.

It really dismays me to see the way people leave their rubbish behind. How would they like it if we sat on their lawns and left cartons and the like behind. Great idea to pick up a few things if it makes the environment better for others.

Great post! Let's keep it wild, natural, and clean. I've always tried to follow a simple rule "Always leave it a little better than you found it." It works for dirty beaches and nearly everything we do in life.

Thanks for reminding us.

Sadly, when I go for nature hiking, I see trash around. Can't people just pick up their trash and throw into the trash can later.. darn

If you live ear a beach you ought to try and go out just after storms in the fall, winter and spring to take a treasure hunt and cleanup walk.

We take an offroad (garden type) wagon with a 3 or four garbage bags and after only an hour often walk off the beach with all of them filled and a number of dried sea stars, shells and other beach treasures washed ashore.

Eric,
That’s a good idea, in terms of combining clean-up and fun. For this beach it won’t work, and for those who wonder why people don’t put their trash in the trashcan…For this particular beach it’s not completely an individual problem, it’s a city-cities problem. It’s really sad to watch the city itself say, “It’s not our fault! It’s the cities around us that are dumping wrong!” as a an excuse for doing anything about it.

This beach has a break wall around it to “protect” cargo and oil ships. The hydrology around it means that anything dumped around the area gets washed up on the beach. We’re talking major-scale garbage dumping, and this beach collects the worst (IMHO)…But nobody’s has tried to take care of this particular beach by holding monthly clean-ups like those that happen at other beaches. They’re to busy bickering on how to “fix” the problem and who is responsible for fixing it.

Lots of people are yelling for the break wall to be removed, but that just means the garbage is washed out to sea. And for me “out of sight, out of mind” is not a solution! And of course, this bickering does not prevent individuals from doing something…

I agree with you. Sometimes, human beings are acting 'wild' towards our one and only Mother Nature. Shame...

Excellent post! Sadly we live a long way from the sea but picking up litter has long been something I will do when I see any.

Sorry to be so long in returning your visit :)
